It’s Plastic Free July! Are you up for the Challenge?

 July 1, 2022  | By: Jennifer Brett

This year, Sailors for the Sea Powered by Oceana is taking part in Plastic Free July, which is an annual, global movement to raise awareness about plastic pollution. Each week we will explore ways we can eliminate unnecessary plastics in our lives, including opportunities to get involved in campaigns that will prevent plastic pollution in the first place.

Plastic Free July Challenge Week 1: Knowledge is Power.

For Week 1, we are challenging you to perform a single-use and throwaway plastic audit. Don’t let the word audit make you nervous—it’s just a look at all the plastic in your life that is designed to either be used once and then disposed of (water bottles, plastic bags), or has a limited lifespan (shampoo bottles).

Step 1: For one week, collect all the single-use and throwaway plastic waste from your household (or on your boat!) and keep it in a separate bin—think yogurt containers, milk jugs, body lotion bottles, dish soap bottles, juice and water bottles, etc. Did you order takeout this week? Save any containers or service items from that, too.

Step 2: Tally up what you have and take a photo. Does the amount surprise you? Start making a list of items that you think could be swapped with a plastic-free or refillable/reusable alternative. (We will revisit this in the coming weeks.)

Step 3: Keep an eye out for our next Plastic Free July Challenges where we start diving into ways to tackle the plastic pollution problem!
