Updates from across the Pacific

Last month our affiliate, Sailors for the Sea Japan hosted a dinner with our chairman, David Rockefeller, Jr. in Yokohama, Japan. The event highlighted the importance of eating fish that is fished or farmed in a responsible manner, while featuring the best “blue” seafood choices available in Japan. Over 200 guests attended the event to learn more about the importance of healthy oceans and coasts.

So more exciting updates from Japan include the opening of a new store in Yokohama, pictured above. A percentage of the proceeds from the store help support Sailors for the Sea Japan. Additionally, the partnership between elementary schools in San Diego and Yokohama continues to forge a cross-ocean connection amongst students. Recently the students connected through a video call with the help of translators to discus what the ocean was like in their hometowns and the importance of protecting their local waters.

The Blue Seafood Guide, created by Sailors for the Sea Japan highlights sustainable seafood options and is targeted specifically to fish species commonly eaten in Japan. It is the first of its kind in Japan, and was created with funding from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. To view the guide (only available in Japanese) click here.
