Kicking off the summer! - Sailors for the Sea

Kicking off the summer!

 July 3, 2014  | By: Oceana

Prior to the Rolex Annual Regatta, some of our friends and supporters of gathered at the New York Yacht Club at Harbour Court to meet our president, R. Mark Davis and chat with staff and board about sustainable sailing.

We were excited to host the event at NYYC as they have been incorporating Clean Regattas into their operations for a number of years with a strong storm water management plan, efforts to reduce single use water bottles and an extensive recycling program!

With the start of the Newport Bermuda Race fast approaching, the Cruising Club of America (CCA) had a strong attendance. The CCA Environmental Committee encourages their members to adopt a “Leave No Trace Policy” to minimize the likelihood that sailors do not contribute to the problem of marine debris. With this mission in mind, Sailors for the Sea worked closely with the CCA Environmental Committee and Newport Bermuda Race organizers (with support from the Bonnell Cove Foundation) to certify the race as a Gold Level Clean Regattas.

David Rockefeller, Jr., chairman of Sailors for the Sea, spoke briefly about how the organization grew out of his passion for the ocean as both a sailor and member of the Pew Oceans Commission.  He introduced Sailors for the Sea’s first President, R. Mark Davis, who shared with assembled guests a snapshot of the accomplishments they helped make possible and the vision for the future.  In 2014 and beyond, Sailors for the Sea looks to scale up the impact of our programs and mobilize boaters as change agents – engaging 1.2 million boaters over the next three years to build the ocean conservation movement.

The evening was made possible by the Tempus Class, whose representatives joined us with the first yacht in their new line, Tempus Fugit.  This spirit of tradition 90-foot yacht was designed by Humphreys Yacht Design in the UK and built by Arkin Pruva Yachts in Turkey.  If you missed seeing her gleaming mahogany hull along the NYYC dock, head to the Newport Shipyard this summer for a tour!
