Green Sports Alliance Summit - Sailors for the Sea

Green Sports Alliance Summit

 July 15, 2015  | By: Oceana

The Green Sports Alliance leverages the cultural and market influence of sports to promote healthy, sustainable communities where we live and play. By inspiring sports leagues, teams, venues, their partners and millions of fans to embrace renewable energy, healthy food, recycling, water efficiency, species preservation, safer chemicals and other environmentally preferable practices real change is happening.

Alliance members represent nearly 300 sports teams and venues from 20 different sports leagues and 14 countries. Since February of 2010, the Alliance has brought together venue operators, sports team executives and environmental scientists to exchange information about better practices and develop solutions to their environmental challenges that are cost-competitive and innovative. The Green Sports Alliance was conceived and founded by Paul G. Allen’s Vulcan Inc. and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Sailors for the Sea is a Community Partner of The Green Sports Alliance. Community partners are an integral part of the annual conference and share valuable information about sustainability and environmental best practices to the network. For example, our Clean Regatta’s program is the world’s only sustainability certification program for water-based events. Our presence and influence in this area exemplifies the best of what the boating community is doing to protect the ocean. In the fall of 2014, Artemis Racing was the first professional sailing team to join The Green Sports Alliance!

Our President, R. Mark Davis was one of the game-changers that gathered in Chicago last month to advance sustainability in sports at the 2015 Green Sports Summit. The international event featured the most prominent professional and collegiate sports teams and venues across the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS and NCAA, and the latest thinking around greening the sports industry and engaging fans through environmental stewardship.

A poll commissioned by the Green Sports Alliance indicates more than 80% of sports fans express concerns about the environment and nearly 60% expect teams and leagues to use environmentally preferable practices. Sports leaders recognize the profound impact their operations have on the environment and the global supply chain—from where they source their food to how they dispose of game-day waste.

For the boating community, our arena is the ocean and whether on a sailboat, rowboat or powerboat, any traveler by water can reduce their environmental impact while enjoying the waters they love. With over 12 million registered boaters in the United States, Sailors for the Sea is working to activate these water sports fans to become an army of ‘blue’ voices that works together to protect the ocean.
