Newport, Rhode Island – September 25, 2012 – Sailors for the Sea, the only ocean conservation nonprofit focused on the sailing and boating community, announces West Marine has agreed to support Sailors for the Sea by hosting a Community Day on October 4 at its Sausalito Store (295 Harbor Drive, Sausalito, Calif.) and donating to the organization five percent of the day’s sales from the store.

Representatives from West Marine’s Sausalito store and Sailors for the Sea welcome boaters to join them Thursday, October 4, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. for the Community Day event and barbeque. The event will consist of activities throughout the day geared toward educating attendees on the various threats and dangers to the health of local waters and the ocean, as well as marine ecosystems. Activities are based on Sailors for the Sea Rainy Day Kits program:

  • The Deadliest Catch, contributed by The Pew Environment Group, is a hands-on fishing activity designed to teach people about the effects of advancing technology on fishing stocks.
  • Sustainable Seafood Matching Game, contributed by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch, is a matching game teaches people to identify different species of fish based on their appearance, and which species have been sustainably harvested.

“West Marine has a long-standing tradition of hosting Community Day events and proudly donates a percentage of the day’s sales to a non-profit boating or marine environmental organization,” said David Forbes, manager, West Marine, Sausalito, Calif. store. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to support Sailors for the Sea’s efforts to educate and engage the boating community in the worldwide protection of the oceans.”

Customers will receive useful information about Clean Boating and programs designed to help them better protect and preserve the local waters and oceans, and about how their sailing center or yacht club can make their boating events eco-friendly with Sailors for the Seas Clean Regattas certification. Attendees will receive a Blue Future reusable shopping bag and guests can enter to win a $100 West Marine gift card.
