Velocitek Supports Ocean Conservation

GPS-based instruments for performance sailing supports Sailors for the Sea

Sailors for the Sea is excited to announce Velocitek’s third annual contribution in support of the organization’s mission to educate and engage the boating community in the worldwide protection the oceans. Velocitek made this contribution through their commitment to 1% for the Planet. Based in Paia, HI, Velocitek is a team of surfers and sailors who love to spend their free time on the water, and are committed to protecting the waters they enjoy.

“We are very thankful to Velocitek for their support of our mission, and it is inspiriting to be supported by such an innovative company within the sailing industry, said R. Mark Davis, president of Sailors for the Sea. We will use this donation to educate boaters about ocean health issues and work with race organizers to run sustainable events.”

In 2013, Velocitek introduced SHIFT, an inertially stabilized magnetic compass designed specifically to help sailors identify wind shifts quickly and accurately. While creating Shift, Velocitek took into consideration the usage of batteries in their instruments and changed their product to have a rechargeable battery that is powered by a solar panel on top of the instrument. This innovation demonstrates one of the company’s core beliefs that they “have a moral obligation to make products that help protect the natural environment, especially lakes and oceans.”

“We were very pleased to introduce a product that reduced the equipment’s environmental impact with solar power, but also supports ocean conservation through our donations of 1% of our sales to Sailors for the Sea, said Alec Stewart, president of Velocitek.

Velocitek has been a member of 1% for the Planet since 2006, which is a coalition of more than 1,200 businesses in 48 countries that donate 1% of their sales to a network of 3,300 nonprofits worldwide focused on environmental issues.
