An avid sailor with passion for conservation, was instrumental in creating Christie’s first Green Auction.

 

Newport, Rhode Island – January 26, 2011 – Sailors for the Sea, the only ocean conservation nonprofit focused on the sailing and boating community, today announced that Edward James Dolman, chairman, Christie’s International plc., has been elected to the Sailors for the Sea board of directors.

In September 2010, Mr. Dolman was appointed chairman of Christie’s International after previously serving as the company’s CEO, a position he held since December 1999. Currently at Christie’s, Mr. Dolman is responsible for global business development and client relationships at the highest levels of the art market, heads the board of Christie’s, and is a member of the firm’s elite team of auctioneers. He was instrumental in creating Christie’s first Green Auction, the proceeds of which went to non-profit environmental organizations. Mr. Dolman continues to support Christie’s Green Auction efforts, including the promotion of this initiative to other Christie’s offices worldwide.

The election of Mr. Dolman represents a significant step in positioning Sailors for the Sea as the primary information resource for boaters concerning programs that protect and restore local waters and ocean health. “A life-long sailor with a strong conviction to ocean conservation, and with business acumen that will help Sailors for the Sea expand its existing programs, Ed is a perfect match for the board of directors,” said David Rockefeller, Jr., co-founder and chairman of the board, Sailors for the Sea.

Sailors for the Sea educates and empowers the boating community to protect and restore oceans and local waters. David Rockefeller, Jr., an avid racing sailor and deeply committed environmentalist, co-founded Sailors for the Sea as a direct result of his work on the Pew Oceans Commission that identified profound and alarming ocean health issues, which include marine debris, overfishing, habitat alteration and degradation, non-point source pollution, invasive species and inconsistent ocean management policies. Sailors for the Sea works with many organizations to leverage the effectiveness of its programs and projects while galvanizing the boating community, which has a deep passion for and understanding of the sea, around ocean health issues.

According to Edward Dolman, “It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to support the on-going efforts of Sailors for the Sea, which has made great strides in motivating boaters to take individual actions that lead to improved ocean health. I look forward to working with the Board to build the organization’s membership and help to define the organization’s longer-term strategies that will further educate the public on the need for ocean conservation.”

An RYA qualified Yachtmaster, Mr. Dolman has a long history of boat cruising and sailboat racing experience from which he has developed a deep appreciation for the need to protect and preserve fragile waters worldwide. “We are excited to have Ed join the Sailors for the Sea board of directors. He has a fabulous blend of business and sailing experience that will serve Sailors for the Sea and the ocean environment very well,” said Dan Pingaro, CEO of Sailors for the Sea.

Mr. Dolman has 26 years of experience with Christie’s. During his tenure as CEO, he directed Christie’s new business development and strategy, and enhanced Christie’s operations on a global basis. Leading Christie’s through a decade of great change, he shaped many groundbreaking initiatives for the company, including in the technology and business strategy areas to seize trends in the market that included a shift to modernism and a rapidly expanding global client base. Mr. Dolman was educated at Dulwich College and Southampton University. He continued his studies in the connoisseurship, appreciation, and history of the decorative arts at The Study Centre for Fine and Decorative Arts in London.
