The Ocean State Now Has a World Oceans Day Event

Press Release

Sailors for the Sea Launches Week-Long Marine Trash Pick-up to Protect Ocean State’s Coastal Waters. Open to all boaters with one participant to be named Sailors for the Sea Ocean Watcher.

Newport, Rhode Island- June 2, 2011 – Sailors for the Sea, the only ocean conservation nonprofit focused on the sailing and boating community, announces the first annual Sailors for the Sea World Oceans Day Clean Up(June 2 through June 8 – World Oceans Day)One participant will be named Sailors for the Sea Ocean Watcher, which includes a 12-month membership to Sailors for the Sea valued at $500.

Sailors for the Sea challenges all Rhode Island boaters – paddlers, sailors, power boaters, and anglers – to pick up trash while out on the water and post a picture of the collected garbage on the Sailors for the Sea Facebook page, or participants can email their photo to info@sailorsforthesea.org along with their name and where the trash was found.

In addition to removing marine trash, The Sailors for the Sea World Oceans Day Clean Up aims to raise awareness of the vast amount of litter polluting local waters and damaging local ecosystems. It is the first event in Rhode Island in 2011 registered with the World Oceans Day organization. Each year World Oceans Day marks a day when people around the planet celebrate and honor the body of water that links us all, for what it provides humans, and what it represents.

“Sailors for the Sea is proud to be part of this growing global celebration and the first organization in Rhode Island to register its event,” said Dan Pingaro, executive director, Sailors for the Sea. “It’s no secret that a picture truly is worth a thousand words. We believe that the visual insight into the magnitude of trash littering the ocean and local waters will motivate people to take action and make changes to how they use the ocean to ensure clean, safe water enjoyment for everyone.”

During the seven-day event, which begins June 2, boaters are asked to post pictures of their trash collections and share their thoughts about how they are making a difference protecting local waters on the Sailors for the Sea Facebook page and ‘tweet’ about their efforts (kindly include #sailorsforsea). On June 8 (World Oceans Day), Sailors for the Sea will name one participant as the Sailors for the Sea Ocean Watcher. This distinction includes a profile on the Sailors for the Sea website and in the organization’s e-newsletter, and a 12-month membership to Sailors for the Sea, which includes a Sailors for the Sea sticker, brochure, hat and burgee, and discounts on Atlantis WeatherGear and ePaint products

Pingaro notes, “It’s time to get out on the water, enjoy the Ocean State, and help keep it clean.”
