New Partnership with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program - Sailors for the Sea

New Partnership with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program

Press Release

Sailors for the Sea is the first partner of the program in Rhode Island working to promote sustainable seafood

Newport, Rhode Island (April, 13, 2015) – Sailors for the Sea — a leading conservation organization that engages, educates, inspires and activates the sailing and boating community toward healing the ocean — announces a new partnership with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch® program.

Around the world, the ocean is an important source of food and income, but nearly 85% of the world’s fisheries are fished to capacity. We are removing fish from the ocean faster than they can reproduce. Seafood Watch® empowers individuals to choose seafood that is caught in a sustainable, environmentally-friendly manner to ensure the ocean can continue to be a source of food and income for generations to come.

“We are proud to be a conservation partner of this impressive program that has been educating consumers about sustainable seafood since 1999,” noted R. Mark Davis, president of Sailors for the Sea. “As the first partner in Rhode Island we are excited to share their informative app and brochures to consumers around the state, along with encouraging Clean Regattas to serve sustainable seafood. Additionally, we look forward to our affiliate, Sailors for the Sea Japan, continuing their work with scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and further develop their Blue Seafood Guide, which is the first sustainable seafood listing in Japan.”

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch® program empowers consumers and businesses to make choices for healthy oceans, and helps support diverse marine ecosystems for the future. Using science-based, peer reviewed methods, Seafood Watch® assesses how fisheries and farmed seafood impact the environment and provides recommendations indicating which items are ‘Best Choices,’ ‘Good Alternatives,’ and which ones to ‘Avoid.’

“Seafood Watch is proud to welcome Sailors for the Sea as its newest partner,” says Seafood Watch Director Jennifer Dianto-Kemmerly. “Working together is critical to help create healthy and abundant oceans that will continue to supply us with food, help regulate our climate, and provide a livelihood for millions of people.”
