March 19, 2013 – Newport, R.I., With less than two months until the start of the third annual 2013 Atlantic Cup presented by 11th Hour Racing, Manuka Sports Event Management, is pleased to announce a special evening celebrating the race and its environmental commitment. Living on the Edge: Coastal Communities and Climate Change will take place Thursday, May 16th from 6pm-9pm at View of the World at the World Center Hotel in Lower Manhattan.

The first carbon neutral sailing race in the United States, The Atlantic Cup is furthering its mission for the 2013 edition by bringing together some of the environmental industry’s most well respected voices to celebrate the Race and recognize the changing climate. Sailors for the Sea’s Founder David Rockefeller, Jr. will provide opening remarks. Global Green USA’s President Matt Petersen will moderate a panel entitled “Telltales,” a discussion about climate change at the convergence of land and water.  This topic is “invisible,” intangible much like the wind and weather, which affects all of us and the sailors of this event. The panelists are the telltales: storytellers giving the audience a series of thoughts and perspectives.

The panelists are: Dr. Ben Strauss the Chief Operating Officer and Director on Sea Level Rise for Climate Central, Hannah Jenner, skipper for 40 Degrees Racing and Chip Giller, President and Founder of Grist.org.

“As sailors we provide a natural bridge between the oceans we play on and the land we live on. Running a carbon neutral sailing race, while being a major challenge, is a small piece of the larger environmental challenges we all face,” said Hugh Piggin, Manuka Sports Event Management Founder and Atlantic Cup Race Director. “Adding this event in New York has been in the works for over a year and with 11th Hour Racing’s support we are delighted to be able to bring such a stellar group of thought leaders together to provide additional steps toward changing behaviors and setting positive examples that can be carried both into our individual lives and the wider community as a whole.”

“The Atlantic Cup represents the model for sailing events to come: focusing on the adventure and skill of the sailors and their interaction with the waters they sail in. The Living on the Edge event further connects land and water which represents the lifeblood of who and what we are, as humans: literally and figuratively,” said Jeremy Pochman, Director of 11th Hour Racing.

About The 2013 Atlantic Cup
The Atlantic Cup presented by 11th Hour Racing is a dedicated professional Class 40 race held annually in the U.S. with a focus on running an environmentally responsible event. The 2013 edition of the Atlantic Cup starts Saturday, May 11th in Charleston, South Carolina and will showcase the top Class 40 sailors as they race a 648 nautical mile off-shore leg double-handed from Charleston around the infamous, Cape Hatteras then north to New York City. Once in New York there will be a brief stopover before competitors start the coastal leg of the race. The coastal leg will take competitors along the same course as the 2011 and 2012 race: 260 nautical miles, south out of New York to a turning mark off the New Jersey coast before heading north to Newport. Once in Newport, competitors will race a two-day, inshore series with a crew of six. The combined overall winner of both stages will be the Atlantic Cup Champion.

Competition Schedule:

  • May 11 – Depart Charleston, South Carolina, for double-handed (two people on board) 645 nautical miles from Charleston to New York Harbor, New York around the challenging Cape Hatteras
  • May 17 – Compete in a one day Pro-Am race in New York Harbor
  • May 18 – Depart New York Harbor with double-handed 260 nautical miles from New York to Newport
  • May 25/26 – Two days inshore fully crewed (six people on board) buoy racing in Narragansett Bay.
  • May 27 – Event finish – party and award presentation
