Listed below are Sailors for the Sea's resources to help you reduce your impact while on the water.

  • Overboard Discharges: Do not discharge untreated sewage or blackwater in harbor areas or no-discharge zones, find a list of pumpout stations here.
  • Cleaning Products: Learn more about Green Cleaning Products that can be bought or made for your boat.
  • Oils Spills: Have an oil spill prevention plan on your boat.
  • Bottom Paint: Switch to an environmentally friendly bottom paints.
  • Bottom Cleaning: Prevent bottom cleaning in harbors and sensitive areas. If you trailer your boat scrub your hull when leaving a body of water to prevent spread of invasive species. Click here to learn more.
  • Alternative Fuels: Learn how you can use Biofuel and other alternative fuels on your boat.
  • Carbon Reduction: Reduce your carbon wake by purchasing carbon offsets for when you use your engine.
  • Reusable Water Bottles: Reduce single-use, disposable water bottles in your home and on your boat by using reusable water bottles. Work with your marina, yacht club or sailing organization to have Water Re-filling Stations.
  • Biodegradable Products: Single use plastic is one of the biggest culprits to the detriment of marine health, and the health of marine species. Follow the 4 R's, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. When you must use plastic make use of corn-based, biodegradable products. In the event that these make their way into the ocean, they will eventually break down. Click here for more information.
  • Trash Clean Ups: Create a Green Team for your yacht club or marina. Assemble a team that meets periodically to remove debris on shore and in the water.
  • Recycling: If your marina or yacht club does not provide recycling services petition them to have a recycling program implemented. The more that can be separated and hauled away the better. Click here for information on setting up recycling at your marina.
  • Gray Water Reduction: In order to reduce runoff of phosphates and nitrates into your waters use water only wash downs. Click here to learn more about preventing Gray Water. When you need a heavy duty scrub use only non-toxic cleaning products, which can alleviate the pressure on marine life.
  • Paper: Use 100% post-consumer recycled paper in your home, on your boat, and at the marina. Or go completely paperless by using online billing.
  • Maintenance: Conduct maintenance activities, such as sanding and fairing, in approved areas using mitigation measures, such as tarps and dustless sanders, to contain pollutants.
  • Stormwater Pollution Prevention: Implement a stormwater management system at your home or marina to reduce runoff.
  • Compost: Ensure that all organic and biodegradable waste remain out of the waste stream by composting at home or at your marina. Often organic matter can be collected and taken off site to a local farm to be composted
