Follow these steps to become a certified Clean Regatta:

  1. Register and Pledge your commitment to become a Clean Regatta.
  2. Select the Bronze, Silver or Gold Level and use the below checklist and the included support materials to achieve higher environmental standards.
  3. Run your regatta. Sailors for the Sea will work with you to reach your state goal
  4. After your regatta, submit a report to Sailors for the Sea detailing your efforts and accomplishments, including ways you could improve in the future.
  5. If successful, Sailors for the Sea will award you a Clean Regattas certification.

Clean Regattas Certification Levels

Elements are cumulative with each level of participation. A regatta may forego one requirement in each level and still be certified at that level. A regatta may substitute a requirement from a higher level for one at a lower level and still be certified at the lower level.

Click on the links below to view resources that can help you acheive each item.

BRONZE LEVEL

  • Clean Regatta Commitment-Include in the Sailing Instructions a rule requiring conformance with the requirements of your chosen Clean Regattas Certification levels.
  • Clean Regatta Liaison-Assign a volunteer "Clean Regattas liaison" to communicate with Sailors for the Sea, and present the program at the skippers meeting.
  • Green Team-Assemble a team to work on shore and sea cleanup, oversee recycling operations and communicate the goals and agenda of the program throughout the event.
  • Trash Free Regatta-Keep your shores and waters clear of debris. Overboard discharge of trash and littering at shore facilities (e.g., rigging tape, cigarette butts, beer cans) is prohibited.
  • No Discharge-DO NOT allow discharge of untreated sewage or blackwater in harbor areas or no-discharge zones (NDZs).
  • Recycling-Encourage recycling from boats and shore facilities.
  • Non-Toxic Cleaning Products-Include a list of "green" cleaning products in skipper's packet.
  • Oil Spill Prevention-Require that motorized vessels shall carry and use at least one bilge sponge and one fueling spill pad.

SILVER LEVEL

  • Clean Regatta Committee-Convene "Clean Regatta Committee" for the event to oversee practices and innovations.
  • Recycling-Provide recycling services at shore facilities; require participants to deposit separated recyclable materials (e.g. bottles, cans, paper).
  • Recycled Paper-Use 100% post-consumer recycled paper for event packets.
  • Non-Toxic Cleaning Products-Use only non-toxic cleaning products at docks or shore facilities.
  • No Discharge-DO NOT allow discharge of any sewage in open water. Use only desig- nated pumpout facilities.
  • Bottom Paint-Use no "soft" paint that sloughs off or leaches into the water.
  • Bottom Cleaning-Prohibit bottom cleaning in harbor and sensitive areas. Such activities shall be conducted on shore only in approved areas.
  • Maintenance-Conduct maintenance activities, such as sanding and fairing, in approved areas using mitigation measures, such as tarps and dustless sanders, to contain pollutants.
  • Climate Change -Give regatta participants the option to purchase carbon offsets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from event activities, e.g., committee boats and shore facilities.
  • Regatta Awards-Present race awards and trophies that contain recycled materials, as available.

GOLD LEVEL

  • Clean Regatta Committee-form a permanent "Clean Regatta Committee" for club/organization governance and events.
  • Recycled Paper-Switch to 100% post-consumer recycled paper for all club/organization uses.
  • Recycling-Establish a permanent, comprehensive recycling program.
  • Stormwater Pollution Prevention-Implement a stormwater management system to reduce runoff from shore facilities.
  • Bottom Paint-Use only non-toxic bottom paints. Any paints containing toxic materials are prohibited.
  • Biofuel Conversion-fuel at least one diesel-fueled motorized vessel (e.g., committee boat, launch or support boat) with B20 or higher biodiesel or vegetable oil, or convert chase boat from 2-stroke to 4-stroke engine.
  • Climate Change-Commit to reduce carbon footprint by either (1) reducing energy use by 10% or (2) purchasing offsets for all operations, or a combination thereof.
