The Volvo Ocean Race, an extreme around-the-world sailing competition, will be making its only North American stopover in Newport, RI this May 5th-17th. Two hundred thousand people are expected to visit Fort Adams during the two-week event. At every port stop around the world, the Volvo Ocean Race partners with local organizations to create an exciting Race Village for fans to visit and learn about life at the extreme! Our president, R. Mark Davis is co-chairing the education committee with the help of our education director Shelley Brown, together they are coordinating and planning the Exploration Zone. Additionally, our sustainability director, Tyson Bottenus is working closely with the sustainability committee to help the event achieve a platinum level Clean Regatta Certification.  

The Volvo Ocean Race Village in Newport will have exciting interactive exhibits where children and adults alike will learn what it’s like to sail around the world, be an oceanographer, and discover the continents and cultures that are all part of the race.

A must see stop at the Volvo Ocean Race Village in Newport will be the Exploration Zone. With 19 educational partners presenting 22 exhibits, the Exploration Zone will be full of activities to learn about ocean health, plastic pollution, sea level rise and ocean acidification, along with opportunities to action and protect the ocean! Kids will also get to discover Narragansett Bay’s smallest sea creatures under a microscope, jump in on a scavenger hunt for simple machines or even race small boats using solar power. Whether it is a fun, educational activity for the kids or helpful information for the grown-ups, the Exploration Zone is sure to have something for every member of your family.

How will Sailors for the Sea be involved?

Sailors for the Sea will be part of the Exploration Zone with an exhibit focused on the ocean’s changing chemistry due to absorbing excess carbon dioxide. Through interactive videos participants will learn what ocean acidification is, how it is impacting the ocean, marine species and man-kind and what we can do to stop it. Children and families will be able to get up close and personal by exploring coral reefs, trying on SCUBA gear and protect the ocean by taking the NT3 Pledge to reduce their carbon footprint.
